Lighting Guide
How to Choose Pendant Lighting
A guide to choosing the right pendant lighting — the kind that gives character to a dining table or kitchen island and defines a space from above.
Pendant lighting defines a space from above. It creates a warm focal point over the dining table, turns the kitchen island into a stage and softens a corner with light from above. Compared with the showiness of a chandelier, it speaks a simpler, more modern language; it can be used on its own or in a group.
In this guide we explain what to look for when choosing a pendant lamp — from hanging height to colour temperature, and whether to use one on its own or in a group — and why 3D-printed design pendants stand out.
Pendant or chandelier?
Both hang from the ceiling, but they are different. A chandelier is a showy, eye-catching fitting that brings several lights together. A pendant, on the other hand, usually has a single body and is a simpler, more modern light; it can be used on its own or with several side by side. In modern and minimal spaces the pendant takes the lead; in classic, grand schemes the chandelier does. Many modern living rooms use both together.
6 things to consider when choosing pendant lighting
01Where will you use it?
Kitchen island, dining table, a corner of the living room, the hallway... Where you use it determines everything. The dining table and kitchen island are the most popular spots; here a pendant provides both functional light and a focal point.
02Hanging height (the most important decision)
Hanging a pendant at the right height determines both how it looks and how comfortable it is. The general rule: over a dining table or island, the bottom of the pendant should be about 70–85 cm above the table surface. This distance avoids glare at eye level and lights the table evenly. With high ceilings, it can be raised a little.
03Size, diameter and proportion
A pendant should be in proportion to the surface it hangs over. A large island or a long dining table calls for a more defined pendant (or several); a small area is balanced by a single, simple form. A pendant that is too small gets lost over a large table, while one that is too big overwhelms the space.
04Single or grouped?
A single pendant is a simple, targeted solution. Over a long dining table or a large kitchen island, 2–3 pendants side by side give more balanced light and create a modern rhythm. When grouping, space the pendants evenly and choose the number according to the length of the table.
05Colour temperature (Kelvin)
Over dining tables and seating areas, warm white light (2700–3000K) creates an intimate atmosphere. In the kitchen, a slightly more neutral light (3000–4000K) can be chosen for worktop tasks; but for decorative warmth, 2700–3000K is ideal.
06Form, material and colour
A pendant stands like an object even when switched off. Matte, textured and sculptural forms stand out in modern spaces; glossy surfaces make light harsher, while matte surfaces soften it. You can choose a colour that matches the space and let it blend in, or make it the focal point with a contrasting tone.
Which pendant for which space?
Kitchen island
Over a large island, 2–3 pendants side by side are both stylish and practical. Choose models that cast light downwards without straining the eyes; it is important that they light the work surface without shadows.
Dining table
A single large pendant centred over the table, or 2–3 medium-sized pendants, creates a warm dining atmosphere. Keeping the colour temperature at 2700–3000K brings intimacy to the table.
Living room and lounge
A single pendant that defines a reading corner or a coffee table is a lovely part of layered lighting. It works as an alternative to a chandelier or as a touch that complements one.
Hallway, corridor and bedside
A single pendant adds character to an entrance; with low ceilings, models that don’t hang too low are more suitable. In the bedroom, a pair of bedside pendants frees up the bedside tables and gives a modern look.
Why are 3D-printed pendants standing out?
Mass-produced pendants all look alike. 3D printing makes it possible to produce original forms in a wide choice of colours on demand; the matte PLA surface softens the light, and the layered texture comes alive when the lamp is lit. Its light weight also makes hanging easier. The result is not a mass-produced fitting, but a design object made for your space.
Featured pendant lights from Nazze Studio
Nazze pendants are decorative pendant lamps made from 3D-printed matte PLA; they take an E27 LED bulb and come ready to install. They are available in a wide palette of colours.
Installation and care
Nazze pendants come ready to install with around 2 metres of cable and are used with an E27 LED bulb (incandescent and halogen bulbs are not suitable; smart bulbs are compatible; bulb not included). Wipe the matte surface with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. For the electrical connection, getting help from an electrician where needed is the safest option.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a pendant and a chandelier?
A chandelier is a showy fitting that brings several lights together; a pendant usually has a single body and is a simpler, more modern light. Pendants can be used on their own or with several side by side.
How high above a dining table should a pendant hang?
The general rule is that the bottom of the pendant should be about 70–85 cm above the table surface. This distance lights the table evenly without causing glare.
How many pendants do I need for a kitchen island?
It depends on the size of the island. On large islands, 2–3 pendants side by side give both balanced lighting and a modern look; on small islands, a single pendant may be enough.
What light colour is best for a pendant?
Over dining tables and seating areas, 2700–3000K warm white light is recommended. For kitchen work surfaces, a slightly more neutral tone can be chosen.
How is a pendant installed, and which bulb does it take?
Nazze pendants come ready to install and take an E27 LED bulb. They are mounted to the connection point on the ceiling; we recommend getting help from an electrician if needed.
Are 3D-printed (PLA) pendants durable?
Matte PLA is lightweight and sturdy, and suitable for normal household use. Its light weight makes hanging easier. We recommend keeping it away from direct high heat and using an LED bulb.
The right pendant lighting rewrites a table or a corner from above. First decide where and at what height you will hang it; then create that atmosphere with the right size, warm light and a beautiful form. All that’s left is to switch it on and enjoy.
